Venezuelan Stefania Fernandez has been crowned the new Miss Universe in the Bahamas, fending off competition from contestants from 83 countries.

The official decision was made at the Atlantis Resort in Nassau by a judging panel which included Andre Leon Talley, the editor-at-large for American Vogue, Dean Cain, the actor, and supermodel Valeria Mazza.

It was Venezuela's sixth Miss Universe crown in the 59-year history of the pageant.

The main event on Sunday was hosted by Celebrity Apprentice star Claudia Jordan and Access Hollywood co-anchor Billy Bush, and included performances by rapper Flo Rida, singers David Guetta and Kelly Rowland and reality star Heidi Montag.

Fernandez, 18, inherited the Miss Universe crown from another Venezuelan, Dayana Mendoza, who won the competition in 2008. During her reign, Mendoza traveled the globe as an advocate for HIV/AIDS education, research and legislation.

The newly-crowned Miss Universe is expected to do the same.

Two other young women from Latin America made it into the top five: 23-year-old Ada de la Cruz of the Dominican Republic and Mayra Matos, 20, of Puerto Rico. The top group also included young women from Australia and Kosovo.

As the new Miss Universe, Fernandez will receive a monetary prize, the size of which has been kept confidential. The top award also includes a 100,000 dollar scholarship to study acting at an academy in New York, a five-day holiday package in the Bahamas for two, jewellery and clothes.

The main attraction for contestants is an opportunity to break into and establish themselves in the lucrative world of show business, organisers said.

"Women who seek the title of Miss Universe are driven by their desires to open for themselves new opportunities in the world of acting and entertainment," Acirema Alayeto, president of Miss Latin America Organization, told reporters.

Each contestant was judged in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and interview.

For the past two weeks, the women have been touring the various islands and participating in preliminary legs of the competition including the swimsuit presentation in Grand Bahama, a costume presentation, a fashion showcase featuring local designs and fabrics and a state auction dinner in New Providence.

The contestants have also toured other Bahamian islands, including Grand Bahama, Bimini, Exuma, Eleuthera and Abaco, visiting landmarks and posing for photographs.

As Hurricane Bill neared last week, several contestants expressed worries about their safety and the prospects for the competition, but the storm's path passed far away from the islands.

The pageant was watched by an estimated worldwide viewing audience of approximately one billion people.

Sunday ratings: 'Miss Universe 2009,' reality steady

Sunday night reality shows and NBC's annual presentation of the "Miss Universe" pageant were fairly steady last night, with Fox continuing to rule the evening with animated repeats.

NBC's two-hour "Miss Universe" contest (5.9 million viewers, 2.0 preliminary adults 18-49 rating) matched last year's rating and helped the network tie CBS for second place in the adult demo. And guess NBC isn't finished with Speidi -- the special featured a performance by Heidi Montag (video below).

CBS' "Remember Don Hewitt" memorial put "60 Minutes" (7.5 million, 1.2) lower than usual. "Big Brother" (7.4 million, 2.5) dropped slightly, and "There Goes the Neighborhood" (3.8 million, 1.2) fell to its lowest number yet.

ABC's "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" (7.6 million, 1.5) was up a tenth this week. "Shark Tank" (5.6 million, 1.8) held last week's gain, but advanced no further, despite ABC running plenty of promos quoting a certain blogger calling the show "addictive." "Defying Gravity" (2.7 million, 0.8) slipped a tenth.

Our pop princess is being sued once again (what are we up to this year? 4? 5?) by a former TMZ photographer. Ricardo Mendoza is claiming his foot was run over and has filed a civil lawsuit against Spears.

Spears negligently operated her car and committed assault and battery when she ran over his foot in Beverly Hills on Oct. 18, 2007. Several media outlets picked up footage of the incident, including celebrity gossip site TMZ, where Mendoza worked at the time. TMZ, which first reported the lawsuit, auctioned off his tire-stained sock and donated the proceeds to charity.

Wait it doesn't end here! Mendoza is also suing a pair of Spears' companies, claiming their agents should have known that Spears wasn't capable of properly driving the vehicle.

The decision to scale back her career to focus on family was almost certainly difficult for actress Michelle Pfeiffer, but necessary all the same. In a new interview with The Scotsman the 50-year-old Dangerous Liaisons star says that she’s “always looking for ways to simplify life,” and that raising Claudia Rose, 15, and John Henry, 14, while simultaneously running a production company “pushed the limit” of her energies. “I love acting and I love making movies, but the business side of film-making was getting in the way,” Michelle explains.

Now that she’s returned to the set in earnest — her new film Cheri opens next month – Michelle admits that her kids are familiar with the film-making process. At the same time, she doesn’t hesitate to keep them at arm’s length depending on the material. “My children are old enough to understand what mommy does for a living,” she notes, adding,

“I take them on set whenever possible, but it’s better for me if they’re not there at difficult scenes. You’ve always got all these plates spinning in the air.”

Claudia and John are Michelle’s children with husband David E. Kelley.

In spite of his humble start in show business, actor Tom Hanks emerged from the comedy series "Bosom Buddies" to become an Academy Award winning actor and Emmy winning producer and director. Tom made a name for himself with a warm role in “Big” (1988), and then going on to a double Oscar win with “Philadelphia” (1993) and “Forrest Gump” (1994). He then took on roles as an tyrannical corporate executive in “Cast Away” (2000), a mob hit man in “Road to Perdition” (2002) and a cocaine loving and hooker friendly congressman in “Charlie Wilson’s War” (2007), all while cementing himself as one of the best actors of his generation.
Born on July 9, 1956 in Concord, California, Tom was reared by Amos, a cook and restaurant manager, and Janet, a health care worker. In 1960, his father moved the family to Reno, Nevada to start a new life, later divorcing Janet. After his second marriage failed, his father picked up the family and relocated to Oakland, California, where Hanks spent his early years.

In 1978, he sold his Volkswagen Beetle and used the money to move to New York City in order to chase his dream of playing the theater on Broadway. Work on the Great White Way was hard to find, though he did manage to be cast in feature with a small part in the terror and horror flick, “He Knows You’re Alone” (1980).

He received good reviews with a starring role in the television situation comedy “Bosom Buddies,” playing an advertising administrator who moves into a cheap women only hotel with his advertising executive friend (Peter Scolari) on the condition that they both dress like women.

After “Bosom Buddies” was cancelled, he made a guest appearance on a 1982 episode of "Happy Days" (1973 that impressed fellow cast member Ron Howard enough to cast him as lead in "Splash" (1984), a comic story about a young and charming produce salesman who falls in love with a mermaid played by Daryl Hannah. He then took as hilarious but immature role in "Bachelor Party" (1984), then appeared in a series of flops, "The Man with One Red Shoe" (1984), "The Money Pit" (1986) and “Dragnet” (1987).

But in 1988, Hanks showed his true talent for the first time. In “Punchline” (1998), he had a strong role as an aggressive stand up comedian who first teaches, then competes against a growing female comic (Sally Field). He then played a 12 year old boy ensnared in the body of a 35 year old man in "Big" (1988), a massive comedy smash hit from director Penny Marshall. He was honored with his first of several Academy Award nominations for Best Actor. After “Turner & Hooch” (1989), he starred in the peculiar "Joe Versus the Volcano" (1990) with Meg Ryan, playing a man who is convinced he is dying and agrees to jump into an isolated island volcano in order to appease an irritated god. Then, he was poorly miscast as a Wall Street money maker in “Bonfire of the Vanities” (1990) with Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman.

Because of the calamity of “Bonfire of the Vanities,” the actor asked director Penny Marshall to cast him for the lead role in "A League of Their Own" (1992) with Geena Davis, the look at the first all woman baseball league which was started during World War II. He took the role of Jimmy Dugan, a down and out drunk and past player who finds his joy of the game through managing a winning team. Meanwhile, he worked on another hit when he teamed with “Joe vs. the Volcano” co-star Meg Ryan in Nora Ephron's romance, "Sleepless in Seattle" (1993). Again showing both deep appeal and a talent for comedy, For his role, he was nominated for Best Actor - Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globe Awards.

The actor next shot into celebrity stardom with his award winning role in "Philadelphia" (1993) with Denzel Washington, playing a homosexual attorney who is dying of AIDS while working to win a discrimination case after getting fired. Even with the film being bashed by gay and homosexual activists for being too soft on the gay issue, he was applauded for his performance. His next film, “Forrest Gump” (1994), had him playing a young man who leads a remarkable life taking part in many of the noteworthy moments of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s despite having an I.Q. of only 76. He showed the appropriate vision necessary for the role sayings like "Stupid is as stupid does" and "Mama always said life was like a box a chocolates: You never know what you're going to get," which became part of the countries vocabulary. “Forrest Gump” was the year's highest grossing movie and won six Academy Awards, including his second win for Best Actor.

He then reunited with “Splash” director Ron Howard for "Apollo 13" (1995) with Kevin Bacon, a tense look at the famous 1970 NASA mission to the moon. Playing astronaut Jim Lovell, a role that was originally offered to Kevin Costner, he delivered a rock-solid performance as the commander trying to bring his crew back to Earth safe and sound.

The actor next lent his talented voice to the character of Woody, a toy cowboy whose standing as top toy of a young boy is endangered by the actions of Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) in "Toy Story" (1995), the first full length computer animated feature. Thanks to his A-list standing, he had the opportunity to show other creative talents, including screenwriting, producing and directing. Tom made his directorial debut with "That Thing You Do!" (1996) starring Liv Tyler, a warm comedy about a band that hits overnight stardom off of one popular song. While not a smash hit, the movie showed his zest for bringing out strong performances from a cast of mostly unknown performers.

He then produced his pet project, "From the Earth to the Moon" (1998), a 13-part mini series that scrutinized the history of the United States NASA space program. Serving as executive producer on the project, he also directed the production, sharing the 1998 Emmy Award for Outstanding Miniseries with co-producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. Next, he was cast by Steven Spielberg for his World War II blockbuster, "Saving Private Ryan" (1998), playing an army captain leading an immature squad of soldiers on a mission to locate a missing serviceman, played by Matt Damon, behind enemy lines. This earned him his fourth Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

Later that same year, he co-starred opposite Meg Ryan in Nora Ephron's "You've Got Mail" (1998), before teaming with "Saving Private Ryan" friend Barry Pepper again to play penitentiary guards who become involved with a puzzling prisoner (Michael Clarke Duncan) in "The Green Mile" (1999), a variation of the Stephen King tale. He collaborated again with "Forrest Gump" director Robert Zemeckis on "Cast Away" (2000), the role cast Tom as a Federal Express employee who gets stuck on a deserted island after a plane crash. His magnificent performance, for nearly a third of the film Hanks was onscreen by himself, brought him instant and universal critical acclaim and his fifth nomination for Best Actor.

He then worked with Spielberg to produce the HBO miniseries, "Band of Brothers" (2001), which followed the soldiers in the 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division from their training in Georgia in 1942 through their involvement in the invasion of Normandy. He also directed one episode of the series, and won an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special. He then took on an out of character role, portraying a 1920s Chicago mobster seeking payback for the death of family members in "Road to Perdition" (2002) starring Jennifer Jason Leigh.

His next film, “Catch Me If You Can” (2002), cast him as Carl Hanratty, a FBI fraud investigator on the trail of the youngest con artist in history to make the FBI 10 Most Wanted list, Frank Abagnale, Jr. (Leonardo DiCaprio). This role was one of his most unique productions and was in contrast to Leonardo DiCaprio’s exciting, easy going character of Abagnale.

The actor then hit big time success with the popular comedy "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" (2002). His next movie was a return to his madcap comedy roots in the Coen Brothers' interpretation of the cult classic British film, "The Ladykillers" (2004). He played the chatty Professor Dorr, a criminal architect whose plan for a robbery is stopped by a persistent old woman.

The actor next worked again with Robert Zemeckis to play multiple characters in the impressive animated "The Polar Express" (2004). Using hi-tech animation and motion mapping, his character was projected onscreen in a variety of positions and postures, playing The Conductor, Hero Boy, Santa Claus, the Hobo and the Boy's Father, which were then edited together into the movies final product.

Returning to action adventure films, he next starred in “The Da Vinci Code” (2006), the much awaited revision of Dan Brown’s larger-than-life book about a murder at the Louvre investigated by a famous symbologist, who solves a sinister attempt to keep a secret that has been protected since the time of Jesus Christ. While the script was kept top secret, the infamous nature of the book had kept filmmakers from working and filing at important locations, including Westminster Abbey, the Vatican, and the city of Rome. Religious groups, already in a rage over the books concept, braced for what was guaranteed to be a blockbuster movie. Though on paper a gigantic box office success, it took in over $210 million in domestic box office, “The Da Vinci Code” was down played by most media critics and reviewers for not living up to its potential.

After lending his distinctive voice to the adventure “Cars” (2006), and “The Simpsons Movie” (2007), the actor helped narrate “The War” (2007-08), Ken Burns’ stunning and detaled look at everyday Americans fighting in World War II. He then starred in the political satire, “Charlie Wilson’s War” (2007), where he played “Good Time Charlie” Wilson, a United States congressman with a knack for prostitutes and cocaine, whose deep nationalism and discontent with American foreign policy leads him to team up with the richest woman in Texas (Julia Roberts) and a middle class CIA worker (Philip Seymour Hoffman) to fund the Mujahideen fighters after the Soviets invade Afghanistan. He wrapped up the year with the dramatic comedy "The Great Buck Howard" (2008) about a young man, much to the chagrin of his father, becomes the new assistant to an illusionist in decline.

Next was the mystery thriller "Angels & Demons" (2009) an adaptation of the Dan Brown novel about Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon who works to solve a murder and prevent a terrorist act against the Vatican. Hw was then cast in the animated comedy "Toy Story 3" (2010) where Woody, Buzz, and the rest of their toy-box friends are dumped in a day-care center after their owner, Andy, departs for college. And wrapping up the year is the western drama "Boone's Lick" (2010) a story that revolves around a headstrong woman who drags her family on a rickety wagon from Boone's Lick, Mo., to the Wyoming fort where her husband lives.

She’s already a reality star and a fashion designer, but Lauren Conrad is adding another title to her crowded resume: Author.

Conrad, 22, has signed on to write a three-book series of young adult fiction for HarperCollins. The books – the first of which is scheduled to hit shelves in the summer of 2009 – will be loosely inspired by Conrad’s own experience going from an ordinary teen to a reality TV star.

“It’s definitely influenced by my own life,” said Conrad. “The books are about a girl who moves to L.A. and stars in a reality show, so obviously there are some similarities.”

John McCain just put out an advertisement today that may be one of the shortest sighted political attacks in recent memory. Keep in mind that this criticism is coming from one of his biggest supporters. In the advertisement he compares Barack Obama to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. What bothers me is he throws two important Republican celebrities under the bus to make an attack at Obama. Ms. Spears and Ms. Hilton will hopefully be the grand dames of our party in 20 or 30 years when McCain himself has passed on and getting them in the same attack as one aimed at Obama is collateral damage we can’t afford.

Britney has always been a very loyal Republican. In the 2004 campaign she famously said, “Honestly, I just think we should trust our President in every decision that he makes and we should just support that and be faithful in what happens.” Throughout the 2004 election, she made it very clear that she was for Bush. Not only does that show courage in a left leaning industry like music, it shows remarkable political clarity for a young person. It is important we embrace Britney as a mother as she could be very valuable in getting our message out about family values and self-reliance.

I am not sure that Paris is a Republican, but with a family worth billions it is a good bet. She made it clear in one Sister Sledge video that she clearly doesn’t support the Homosexual agenda and despite her time in the limelight remains a rolemodel to young girls. She has never been pregnant and can certainly make abstinence education a lot more palatable for a young generation that doesn’t find that message terribly with it. She could be a huge benefit to the Republicans not only in this campaign, but in future ones as well.

Why does John McCain feel the need to attack these women. With so many left wing celebrities couldn’t have have compared Obama to Bruce Springsteen or Beyonce? What about all those rappers like JZ I’m sure they’re probably Obama supporters. There’s a saying in camping, “You don’t crap in your drinking water”. It is true here. Don’t get other Republicans caught up in your attacks on Obama.

Barack Obama paid a visit to the ladies of “The View” on Thursday (which aired Friday morning), and Joy Behar asked the burning question a nation of voters wants answered – is the presidential hopeful really related to a Hollywood heartthrob?

“Are you related to Brad Pitt?” Behar asked Obama on the morning chat fest.

“I guess we’re ninth cousins, something removed – or something,” Obama smiled.

Behar’s question came on the heels of a news story, which revealed Obama was a distant cousin of Pitt, while his political opponent, Hillary Clinton, is related to Angelina Jolie.

According to findings by The New England Historic Genealogical Society, Pitt and Obama are ninth cousins, linked by Edwin Hickman, who died in Virginia in 1769.

Meanwhile, Clinton and Jolie are also ninth cousins, twice removed, both related to Jean Cusson who died in St. Sulpice, Quebec, in 1718.

“I think he got the better-looking side of the gene pool,” Obama joked about his relation to Pitt.

And while Obama was happy to play along with the topic, Barbara Walters revealed the Senator might be selling himself short on the aesthetic comparison.

"We were saying just before you came out – maybe we shouldn't say this. But we thought you were very sexy looking,” she told Obama.

Fusté concluded that "although it is true there might be some indication that Reynoso could be connected to the website where the video was sold, the court could not say for sure if he was the one that put it. Fusté also reprimanded both sides for airing publicly their personal issues.

Who doesn't want Brad Pitt?!

Quentin Tarantino's finally unveiled his long awaited World War II script and he wants Brad for the lead role.

Tarantino reportedly described it as a Spaghetti Western meets World II film that's an homage to 1967's The Dirty Dozen (and its derivatives) with a story about a group of soldiers on their way to be executed who get the chance of a reprieve.

The flick's called Inglorious Bastards and Harvey Weinstein is set to produce. However, Weinstein will not be financing the project.

The Weinstein Company financed Tarantino's last movie, Grindhouse/Death Proof, and didn't make much money.

Better luck this time round, boys!

If Brad's in it we might see it.
